Relationship Requirement
- The Applicant’s partner must be one of the following: British Citizens, persons with indefinite leave to remain in the UK, refugee leave or humanitarian protection or limited leave to remain under Appendix EU or Appendix ECAA.
- You must be aged 18 or over and must have met in person.
- You must not be related in a way that is prohibited by the Home Office.
- You must intend to live together in the UK.
- You must be in a genuine & subsisting relationship.
English Language Requirement
You must prove your knowledge of the English language, typically by passing an approved English language test at A1 level on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) scale.
You may not be required to complete the English language test if you hold an English-taught degree. If the English-taught degree was awarded inside the UK, the degree certificate can be submitted to satisfy the English language requirement. English-taught undergraduate, Master’s, or PhD degrees awarded outside the UK must be supported with additional documentation from ECCTIS (formerly known as UK NARIC) if used to meet the English language requirement.
Financial Requirement
You and your partner must demonstrate financial stability with a combined annual income of at least £29,000.

- Salaried or non-salaried employment income
- Non-employment income (Property rental, dividends from shares, or other non-employment sources)
- Cash savings
- Pension income
- Self-employment income (Self-employment or as a director/employee of a specific limited company in the UK)
Adequate Maintenance
Where your partner is in receipt of certain benefits or allowances in the UK, you may be exempt from meeting the financial requirement for spouse visas by providing evidence of “adequate maintenance”. This includes:
- Career’s Allowance
- Disability Living Allowance
- Severe Disablement Allowance
- Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit
- Attendance Allowance
- Personal Independence Payment
- Armed Forces Independence Payment or Guaranteed Income Payment under the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme
- Constant Attendance Allowance, Mobility Supplement or War Disablement Pension under the War Pensions Scheme
- Police Injury Pension
Accommodation Requirement
You must show that you have adequate accommodation in the UK. The property must not be overcrowded and must comply with public health regulations.
